Foreign Movies

For those with an appreciation for horror movies done well, most of them come from foreign countries, free of the constraints of Hollywood to make something other than slasher flicks, torture porn, and gratuitous nonsense.

That's not to say that bloody violence is entirely absent from foreign horror films; on the contrary, most of the ones I've seen have been much more visually intense than what comes out of America. But the difference lies in the emotional impact these violent scenes have.

Some of the best foreign (horror, thriller, and everything else) movies I have ever seen are the following:

Martyrs
Let The Right One In
The Orphanage
Audition
Ichi the Killer
The Descent
À l'intérieur (Inside)
Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance
Oldboy
Sympathy For Lady Vengeance

I think I haven't seen the first two and Inside... but I have seen the rest and they were all good. Also wasn't Oldboy first in the trilogy then Mr. Vengeance...?

To the best of my knowledge I'm pretty sure Mr. Vengeance was first.

Also, you need to see Martyrs. I watched it the other night, and holy shit I was blown away. If you choose to see it, do so without any knowledge whatsoever about the plot. Don't read outlines, don't read reviews, don't read ANYTHING about the movie. Go into it blind.

It was a fucking experience, let me tell you.

Oldboy was amazing, though. Hollywood is unfortunately remaking it; although I don't know if I can call it a remake since they're not taking the movie and simply translating it, they're actually going back to the source material (the manga) and adapting it from that to make it follow more closely to the story.

Spielberg is directing, Will Smith is playing Dae-su (I'd imagine they'd Americanize the names, though...Probably call him Desmond).

Ah come on! At least try to get someone who obviously is of korean decent...(or asian)

So I just rewatched Inside and man, after seeing Martyrs prior and now this, those damn French directors like to push the boundaries of what can be shown on screen.

There are some particular events in this movie that make the Saw franchise look (even more) like amateur hour.
